Last thursday the RSM held its annnual freshers bar night which had a fantastic turnout. There were loads of freshers and older rsm people attending and at one point we had reached maximum capacity and still had people queing to get in!! In this years freshers yard competition we had 9 freshers step forward to do one although we could have done more had Mr Hill not broken the yard glass!!!! The final winner of the yard competition was Sam Davies with a great time of 28 secs. After the yard competition we continued the frestivities with some boat races and lots and lots of rsm songs and in all we managed to consume 7 barrells of beer! RSM Proposes Union Status!
16 April 2008
A paper will be submitted to ICU Council next week proposing to Restore Union Status to the RSM.
The paper, which has well over 100 seconders so far is proposed by Jon Matthews (DPFS 06/07) and Danny Hill (RSM Pres).
It notes why the RSM lost its Union status at the end of the 2001-2002 academic year when a College re-organization abolished the RCS, RSM, C&GC and ICSM replacing them with the FoLS1, FoPS , FoE and FoM.
The paper details why the RSM doesn't belong as a CSC (clubs and societies committee), but rather as a CCU (constituent, campus union).
The paper is over 18,000 words long and includes a well overdue updated version of the Royal School of Mines Union Constitution.
Post Bottle Match Bar Night.... best ever!
09 March 2008
125 Miners, 6 Barrels, and a hell of alot of yards saw the Union Bar packed out last Thursday. Beer kept flowing throughout the night as players and supporters turned up to celebrate the return of the Bottle and Sharply Cup!

28 January 2008
Yes that’s right!!!!....... After a 4 month holiday with Guilds College Union the RSM mascot has finally returned to its rightful owners. You will be pleased to hear that the £300 ransom issued by CGCU was never paid thanks to a group of 14 elite individuals known as 'Skinners Bottom.'
After a misleading tip-off from a Felix photographer Skinners Bottom assembled on Sunday morning to search across campus. Within a couple of hours the Davy had been saved.
The Davy is now in a secure place and will be out in all its glory at the next Bar Night!!!

Shields return to bar
12 June 2007
After the unusual disappearance of the Union shields from the RSM bar, an investigation finally tracked them down last week. The shields are to be rehung in the bar and securely fastened so that such an incident can never recur. As most had forgotten the layout of the shields, the Union turned to the RSM's online photo gallery to search for old photos of the shields pre-theft.
Committee handover
12 June 2007
The pink pants were exchanged, perhaps rather drunkenly, at last week's Final Finale and since then the new RSM committee have been getting to grips with their new roles. The new President, Mr Daniella Hill, met with C&G delegates last night in talks to secure a better relationship and more joint events with C&G for the coming year. Critics have suggested that we should, instead, stay well clear.
Final closing time for Claud's
05 May 2007
Troubled Claud's Cafe closed its doors today for the last time before the builders move in. The café has been immersed in a crisis ever since plans were revealed to remove the current management and replace it instead with Imperial catering. A staggering 560 signatures were received in an online petition run by the RSM in a bid to save the café, talks for which are ongoing. Whether or not the café returns in around a years time remains uncertain; all we do know is that the RSM building is now without a catering facility for a long time to come.
400+ pints to end the year
01 May 2007
Yes, that's correct - to celebrate the official end of the RSM year, on Tuesday June 5th we will be holding a party to end all others. Join us in the UDH for food, a huge supply of drinks, music, awards, and antics. Tickets are just *£5* and will be on sale after summer fieldwork!
Union bars "not up to scratch"
28 April 2007
The dire service which greets patrons to the bars at Imperial Union continues to worsen, despite a general increase in sales after the Easter period. The bar manager has expressed his concerns that the bars are severely understaffed, bar staff are underpaid and poorly trained. Waiting times often exceed 10 minutes or more, with staff simply not able to cope.
Claud's scandal deepens
28 April 2007
The crisis surrounding the closure of Claud's has worsened. The petition, signed by nearly 600 staff and students in the RSM, has had a significant impact and prompted talks with building manager, Neil Varey. However, a significant increase in ground rent looks to be the deciding factor on the future of Claud's, as Imperial puts its best efforts forward to outprice our small and friendly catering outlet. Inevitably, if Claud's does return, prices will rise, but the loss of this service has a greater impact in demonstrating that ultimately, Imperial College administration can and will oust out any competition which threatens their own catering agendas. The debate continues.
RSM website losing out to Facebook
28 April 2007
The rise of Facebook and the consequential decline of community interaction on the RSM website are almost certainly linked. The trend has continued for the last twelve months since Facebook arrived, and the Forum today is filled with spam, prompting its closure in coming weeks.
Award nominations now open
27 April 2007
As the end of another RSM year approaches, it is time again to put forward nominations for those people who you believe to be rewarded for their services and efforts towards the RSM. As well as half and full colours, there are also a number of other awards available. Please send us your nominations by next Monday. The awards will be announced at the end of year party on Tuesday 5 June.
"Fixed" quiz knocks out RSM
24 March 2007
A competition was held on Thursday night at Imperial to discover the next team to go forward and represent the college in University Challenge, the national TV competition. The RSM team put up a brave fight, but unfortunately did not make the final cut. The event was overshadowed by "blatent fixing" of the results in an attempt to get the ICU Staff and Sabb teams into the final.
RSM election results
24 March 2007
The results of this year's elections were announced at a special bar night on Thursday evening, followed by an evening of celebration to mark the end of term. Daniel Hill will take up the role of President, backed by Holly Sutherland, Alex Middleton and Rosie Smithells on the Exec. A full run down of all the results can be found in the 'In Depth' section.
New golf committee announced
21 March 2007
The RSM's Golf Club held their annual general meeting (AGM) today, and successfully elected a new committee. Oliver Porter takes up the role of Captain, supported by Phil Richardson, Chris Boulter and Craig Lampert who take up the roles of Vice Captain, Treasurer and Hon Sec respectively.
RSM office to move house
19 March 2007
The notorious RSM office, which for the last year has been stuffed away in the back ends of beyond on the fourth floor, is to move. The radical change comes with less than a weeks notice, and despite a reasonable downsizing in space, the new office will be in prime position. Located on the second floor, on the main staircase, it will be ideally placed for things such as ticket and regalia sales. The new office will be open from next Tuesday.
DLB appreciation "all time high"
16 March 2007
Interest in the DLB has increased vastly over recent weeks, mainly as a result of a host of very successful events including the Symposium and most recently the fieldtrip to Snowdonia. Interest in the club has reached an "all time high" according to insiders, and last Thursday's elections saw several of the committee positions highly contended. The DLB has long been seen as a hub for the 'geology goons', but recent activities prove this is quite the opposite.
Clauds petition ready for submission
16 March 2007
After several weeks of petition signing by some 560 students, staff and alumni associated with the RSM, the official document which is hoped will add weight to the argument to save Claud's Café is ready. It will be submitted to the relevant people early in the new week, and an outcome is expected soon.
Wilk new DLB President
15 March 2007
Second coming on third year Geologist Steph Wilk has been elected as the new President of the De La Beche society. Wilk, a keen organiser of this year's fieldtrips, including the recent trip to Snowdonia, narrowly beat rival candidate Adam Baldwin, who takes up the role as Treasurer. Fresher Louisa Stokes becomes Honorary Secretary. The RSMU election results will be announced next Thursday at 5pm in Harry's Bar & Grill.
Elections in crisis
01 March 2007
ICU Elections have fallen into turmoil and the announcement of the results has been delayed. The precise reason for the delay is unknown, although rumours have been flying that it is to do with the winning Presidential candidate. In the meantime, the current Media team have declared "Media Rule" over the Union until the dispute is sorted.
Post-Bottle bar night TONIGHT
27 February 2007
Don't forget that TONIGHT (Tuesday) is the post-Bottle Match bar night in the Union Bar from 7 pm. It looks set to be a good one; we're giving out numerous awards for non-sporting achievement over the weekend, namely those involved in excessive nudity, drinking, Camborne pranks, etc. It's all you can drink for £3 and everyone's welcome.
Clauds petition exceeding 500
27 February 2007
The number of signatures on the petition to save Claud's Café has long passed 500. The deadline for signing the petition has been set for NEXT MONDAY at 5 pm. After this time, any further signatures added will not be added to the official document which will be put forward to college by the RSM. Click on 'In Depth' for more info and to sign the petition.

CSM Pres on the Bottle Match
26 February 2007
A few words of post-Bottle thoughts and thanks from the CSM Pres: "This year was one of the closest bottle matches ever! All sports were played with passion and it is rivalry such as ours that will keep our respective schools alive. Thank you to RSM for a fantastic and historical weekend. We shall make sure that all the silverware and tinware is kept clean and intact!!"
RSM lose in 105th Bottle Match
25 February 2007
The Bottle is making its way to Cornwall this afternoon for the first time in 10 years, following the defeat of the RSM's rugby squad in yesterday's Bottle Match. The RSM won in Squash, but lost in all other sports - golf, football, mens and ladies hockey, and ladies rugby. That didn't seem to dampen spirits too much, as the usual RSM antics ensued in the Bottle after party back at the IC Union. Special thanks to all players and supporters for making it such an entertaining weekend.
Clauds petition approaches 300
21 February 2007
Both staff and students have united in a vast and powerful show of support for Claud's Cafe. The decision to replace the cafe with a college-run outlet after refurbishment has received an angry response. If you haven't signed the petition, make sure you get on the case - there's only a week left before this momentus petition is presented to the Head of building administration [Sign now]
Fire puts RSM building at risk
19 February 2007
A fire has been blazing out of control in the Albert Hall Mansions since 10 am this morning, with more than 20 fire engines now in the process of trying to deal with the crisis. Fire workers are now concerned that the fire could spread across the top floors of the building, causing massive collapse and even damage to neighbouring buildings - including the RSM and the Royal Albert Hall. BBC London has reported on the event and is using a photo captured by an RSM student!
Rapid response to Claud's petition
18 February 2007
Despite being launched yesterday evening, the petition to save Claud's Café has already racked up over 100 signatures in less than 18 hours. This remarkable show of support is backed by a whole host of comments, mostly concerned for the increase in price and lack of friendly service that an IC facility would bring. Meanwhile, news spread fast and "Live!" has reported on the situation. Their editor, however, has attacked the RSM, claiming that there is a severe lack of news communication between us and the rest of college.
Digging up the Miner's past
17 February 2007
The RSM has a new found fame this week, with an article outlining our past, present and future published in the latest edition of Felix, the IC newspaper. The article, which stirs up some truthful thoughts, suggests that RSM students are different than the rest of Imperial, being "more outgoing" and proud of their heritage.
RSM launch mass petition
17 February 2007
A massive campaign has been launched in a bid to save Claud's Café from closure and removal of the present management. The news, which was announced several weeks ago, has been greeted with anger and shock by both staff and students who work or regularly visit the RSM building. An online petition has been launched which will be presented to the IC building administration to ensure that Claud's returns after renovation work, and is not instead replaced with an IC catering facility. Click here to sign the petition.
Frontier Geology intrigues RSMers
16 February 2007
Yesterday's annual DLB Symposium was dominated by accounts of geology and fieldwork in distant lands, including Central Asia, the Sahara, Antarctica and even space. The event was a great success, with a high turn out of both staff and students at the talks and for the after party. Thanks to the DLB for their work.
Breaking news: Clauds to close
07 February 2007
Third floor RSM café, "Clauds", has been given the boot as contractors prepare to refurbish in less than 3 months time. The fete of the café is for the moment unknown, and certainly should Claud's be set to disappear for good, mounting anger will ensue in the form of a petition and perhaps more by the RSM Union and all those associated.

31 January 2007
The next edition of the RSM's in-house magazine, The Pit, is now available online and soon in print. This edition features reviews of all the latest events, including the Christmas Ball and Materials Dinner (with photos!), the latest news, plus the announcement of the T-shirt competition winner.

Materialists recover from party
27 January 2007
Last night saw the New Year's Party hosted by the Materials Society, at the Kensington Close Hotel. A late surge in ticket sales allayed any fears of a low turnout. With copious amounts of wine, it wasn't long before the formalities broke down and the usual RSM carnage ensued. Materialists everywhere, and a few Geologists, have spent the day recovering.
Damning report into road safety
25 January 2007
Prince Consort Road, which runs outside the front of the RSM building, has been damned as one of the most dangerous roads in London. Incidents are nearly a daily occurrence. Students cross the roads on pedestrian crossings as local millionaires drive violently past at speeds often exceeding 50 mph. In this morning's latest incident, a student was nearly hit by a Mercedes as it swerved to overtake another car AND a bus, without realising a pedestrian crossing was just beyond. One witness reported, "I've never seen driving like it. It's only a matter of time before we are dealing with a death on this road".
Tickets available for Friday dinner
25 January 2007
Are you looking for a great way to kick start this weekend? The Materials contingent of the RSM have organised a fantastic dinner and party this Friday night at the Kensington Close Hotel. Best of all, the dinner is open to all RSMers, so why not come along! Discounts are now available if you book as a pair or foursome. Contact Elly Jay for details or to reserve and buy a ticket.
Tours applications approved
24 January 2007
The RSM's De La Beche society and Hockey club have had their recent 'tours' applications approved and been granted additional monetary support from the Union. Both trips, which depart in early March, will be subsidised 32%, knocking a few quid off each ticket. More details about both trips will be announced in the coming week or two.
Snow causes disruption
24 January 2007
Heavy snow has fallen in London causing massive disruption to travel. The last time it snowed, lectures were cancelled and the departments remained empty, but whether this will happen today, nobody knows. More snow is forecast for the coming days.
Union Court still not finalised
23 January 2007
Last night's Union Council meeting was the second attempt to fill remaining places on the Union Court, one of the Union's new governance initiatives. However, there STILL remains a place after delegates failed to vote for a Natural Science candidate, instead opting to reopen nominations. Some believe this is a sign of the lagging student interest in Union politics.
DPGS in new efforts to save job
23 January 2007
Shamed DPGS Shama Rahman made a statement yesterday in an email to all Postgraduates, announcing that she was setting up 'Surgery' twice a week in order to provide an outlet for Graduates to voice their concerns to the Union. The statement was met with a mixed reaction from Graduates in the RSM, who despite having little interest in Union affairs anyway, see this as a last effort by DPGS to save her job.
Welcome to "Fortress Imperial"
21 January 2007
White boxes containing new CCTV cameras have started to appear on the campus, as part of the "Fortress Imperial" plans. The aim is to make the South Kensington campus more secure. It has also been revealed that the RSM building will soon be fitted with new turnstiles, as recently fitted in Biochemistry [Source: Live].
Gales batter RSM building
21 January 2007
Crisis ensued on Thursday as the college was battered throughout the day by fierce gales which have left a trail of destruction throughout the country. Tiles on the Royal School of Mines building were also thrown off, smashing windows on the third floor as they fell. At one point Imperial College Road was closed, with trees throwing debris across the campus [Source: Live].

Agreement reached over cuff-links
17 January 2007
After much deliberation over several months, it has been announced this morning that the RSM will pursue Simon Pike's idea of introducing cuff-links to the fleet or regalia already on sale. An initial order will be placed to assess the market and to sell to those who have already reserved a pair, followed by a second batch in the coming months.
T-shirt competition has begun
17 January 2007
The hunt is now on to find a design for this year's Bottle Match t-shirt. The t-shirts are made every year for the event, carrying a comedy graphic and blurb. Please submit your designs by Friday 26 January by email to bottle@rsmonline.co.uk. All entries welcome, whether they're good or bad, and there are great prizes for the winner.
Quiz night announced
17 January 2007
Yes! That's right - to celebrate the launch of the Centenary and a range of our own RSM events, we're holding a quiz night on Tuesday 13 February, two nights before the DLB Symposium. Start gathering your teams of up to 6 and clue yourselves up on general knowledge! More details to come soon.
Sabb's dire performance exposed
12 January 2007
Deputy President for Graduate Students, Shama Rahman, has been shamefully exposed by the higher beings of the Union in a vote of no confidence. Ms Rahman allegedly neglected many of her duties, resulting in what looks certain to be a rapid ousting from her position. Perhaps Union politics are just being obsessive again, but it does raise questions as to how someone is able to gain such a high position and perform so poorly, for such a long time.
Would you drink there now?
12 January 2007
The dire attempts of the Union to revamp the Da Vinci's bar can finally be partly put aside, after the arrival of new oak furniture. More than a term after reopening for business, the delayed order certainly adds at least some atmosphere, converting the bleak hospital waiting room into a Wagamamas. Well done. There's also some advertising banners in an attempt to add some colour. We're sure the food is still as vile as ever, though.
Happy Christmas from RSM
22 December 2006
The Royal School of Mines Union would like to wish all Miners and friends of the school a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We stand at the end of a very successful year and would like to thank everyone for continued support, and look forward to more RSM antics inside the new year.

Students targeted by gangs
11 December 2006
Organised gangs behind internet scams are targeting UK campuses for recruiting and even offer to support students through their studies. UK students have become a recruitment opportunity for organised gangs behind internet scams. Talented young students are being target to produce trojan horses, software that secretly installs on personal computers and allows them to be used to send vast quantities of spam mail without the users' permission or knowledge. The report, compiled with the Metropolitan police and FBI, identifies bright students rather than existing criminals as the primary target [Source: Live!]
ULU approves Imperial cup entry
10 December 2006
ULU has agreed that Imperial teams can enter ULU sports leagues and cups after we withdraw from the University of London. ULU agreed to an arrangement where IC Union may continue to enter sports teams into their leagues and cups when Imperial withdraws from the University of London. Participation in leagues had already been agreed in principle, however it was thought cups stood a chance of being denied [Source: Live!].
Student rent increases, again
10 December 2006
Students have seen a 23% rise in accomodation costs since 2003-04, reports the latest NUS survey. Once again London tops the list as the most expensive place for students to live with average rent reaching £100 a week. Meanwhile across the border in Wales student's flats average a remarkable £67. Along with rent, the average housing deposit has increased by 21% to £182 nationally, a figure envied by most Imperial students [Source: Live!].

20 November 2006
An increasing number of complaints are being raised across the board about thefts in the RSM. It seems that regardless of value, everything from umbrellas and coats to laptops and entire computers are being removed unlawfully. Everyone is asked to be particularly vigilent and watch out for both your own possessions and those of others. Any suspicious behaviour should be reported to Security immediately (tel. 4444 from any internal phone).
Website showing healthy hits
19 November 2006
The last month has seen a long awaited rise in visitors to the RSM website, with more than 2,000 unique visitors since this time in October and approaching over 200 page loads a day. Recent additions such as photos and regularly updated news have helped the cause.
Wales and Dorset photos added

£40,000 for delays and inconvenience
19 November 2006
It seems that the Union's contraversial £40,000 website, which was launched earlier in the summer, has failed to live up to its expectations. Out of date pages and unused forums attest to a general public disappointment. More recently, the complete lack of interest when it came to helping the RSM get online ticket sales for the Christmas Ball up and running - for which we are STILL waiting - is causing unnecessary delays and inconvenience to many. This follows months of waiting simply to get the RSM recogonised on the website; previously we did not even have a page!
Imperial to join NUS
18 November 2006
In a referendum that broke all previous records, the Members of Imperial College Union decided whether or not we should affiliate to the National Union of Students. Of the 13,252 eligible voters, 4007 ballots were cast giving a turnout of 30.24% with the votes as follows: No: 1,873 (46.74%); Yes: 2,134 (53.26%).
Crucial result expected 19:00
17 November 2006
We've all heard about it; should ICU join the NUS or not? Voting closed at midnight last night with the highest turnout of votees ever recorded, but although the Union are celebrating, the outcome is yet to be confirmed. Through most of the week it has been ~50:50. Results are announced tonight, 19:00, in Da Vinci's bar.

Sex Pests claim quiz victory
02 November 2006
Team 'Sex Pests' narrowly claimed victory in last night's Grad Soc Halloween Quiz, following several hours of quiz mania in the RSM. The evening was a great success with plenty of food, postgrads and staff, fuelled by an impressive amount of beer, wine and plum schnaps.

The Union has kindly sorted us out with our own online shop, which you can access via the menu above. There's not actually anything on sale yet, although you can soon expect to be able to purchase event tickets and regalia, any time you want and from wherever you want.
RSM Rugby vs Honorary Artillery: 42-7
31 October 2006
RSM rugby romped home with an emphatic 42-7 victory in their opening game of the season. The match against the Honrary Artillery Comapny took place at their City of London home; the pitch surrounded by skyscrapers is reputedly the most expensive in the world. The victory was all the more impressive given the carnage of the freshers ball just hours before! RSM stand themselves in good stead for the upcoming season.
Danger! Exclusion Zone created
30 October 2006
In a shocking turn of events, parts of the third floor of the RSM building have been deemed an 'Exclusion Zone' after builders this morning discovered ASBESTOS. Serious concerns have been raised given that the walls were being demolished at the time, with many fearing for their health. The impact this could have on the building works and, importantly, Claud's Café, have not yet been determined.
Carnage at Freshers Dinner
30 October 2006
The unbelievably successful Freshers Dinner welcomed more than 170 patrons on Saturday night, for an evening of fine food, drinks and RSM entertainment. With fines a plenty it wasn't long before some of the Freshers were a little worse for wear, with security tightened and several guests escorted quickly to A&E. Fortunately, no major problems were sustained and the event continued as planned making for a legendary evening which was enjoyed by all.
RSM braced for Freshers Dinner
28 October 2006
Its finally here! In just a few hours more than 170 RSMers will be taking their seats in the MDH for the annual Freshers Dinner, a celebration for all the new students. This will be the biggest dinner in recent history - if not ever - and the usual carnage is expected, although tighter controls are expected to ensure that things don't get too out of hand.
Union stoops to new lows
26 October 2006
One would have thought that Graduation Night would inspire the Union to pull out all the stops with their various drinking establishments. It seems this was not the case and once again the inevitable 55-60 minute queues at the bars ensued, as bar staff remained sparse and slow. This aside, it seemed that the Union was prepared to stoop to new lows; a flooded Gents toilet was reopened and patrons waded through pools of RAW SEWAGE to use them. In short - throw away your shoes.
RSM celebrates Graduands
26 October 2006
Some 60 RSM students graduated yesterday at the annual Commemoration Day, with Batchelors and Masters in Geology, Geophysics and Materials in various forms. Congratulations to all those who have graduated - and - stay in touch with the RSM!

20 October 2006
At the start of October, the RSM committee voted in favour of introducing two new Grad Rep positions on the committee, with the sole aim of communicating details of the RSM, its events, clubs and societies to the graduate students in ESE and Materials. On Tuesday, Louisa Preston and Russell Talling were voted into these positions.

Freshers Bar Night
06 October 2006
The RSM's freshers week line-up concluded last night with the Freshers Bar Night. Records were broken with the fastest yard of all time and the turnover of the event. Anarchy broke out at one point when one of the competitos in the prestigious freshers yard competition turned out to be a Medic. The DLB and MatSoc still have plenty of events for you to come, so keep an eye on your inbox.

Most students will be able to buy their tickets from the RSM or online from next week, so don't worry!

Seeing the growing post-graduate community as an important part of the RSM has resulting in the proposition of creating a new committee position for a Postgraduate Representative. Naked President watched by millions
17 July 2006
RSM President Leah Glass achieved something that perhaps no other member of the RSM ever has. On Saturday night, as part of BBC1's live "Sports Relief" programme, Leah joined members of the IC Rugby team as they participated in a live NAKED run around Television Centre. After the run was complete, a slow motion replay was introduced by Gary Lineker as Leah revealed all to several million viewers. The naked run inspired more than 25,000 public donations to be made in the last 20 minutes of the show heralding the naked run as an immense success.
Strong earthquake in Java, Indonesia
17 July 2006
At 8.19 am this morning, an earthquake measuring M 7.2 occurred south of Java island in Indonesia. The offshore earthquake sparked fears of another tsunami, although none have been observed. At 9.13 am, a powerful aftershock of 6.1 was also recorded, emanating from the same region. The epicentre falls close to the setting of the disasterous earthquake and tsunami of 2004, and in the vicinity of the earthquake earlier this year when nearly 6,000 people were killed.
Clauds safe for "at least a year"
26 June 2006
After many weeks since the news was broken that Claud's Café, the RSM's in-house café on the fourth floor, was to close, it has been announced that everything is safe for at least another year. The college have confirmed that renovation work will not be carried out on the third floor until at least summer 2007, at which time the situation will be reassessed. It remains unclear whether this change in stance is due to increased pressure by ESE staff or because of disorganisation. In the meantime, the café will adapt to be more "IC-like", introducing a new coffee machine and 'panini's'. It is hoped that the prices will remain the same or at least significantly lower than the rest of college.
Year ends with departmental party
26 June 2006
Yet another academic year is over, and to celebrate the department (ESE) organised a party for all third and fourth years to say farewell to leavers. The party continued until late, with the Union's end-of-year Carnival attracting hundreds into the Union, offering outdoor dancing. A queue extended outside the door for the first time in many months, but bar service was more than disappointing once inside. The RSM would like to wish all those who have graduated both congratulations and the best of luck with all future endeavours.
Your thoughts on London's estate agents
19 June 2006
It's that time of year again where many of us are moving house, either in the next few weeks or later in the summer. RSMers are sharing their advice and experience in the RSM Forum, where you can recommend good estate agents and places to search, and tell us of those that you have had bad experiences with. Your thoughts will be compiled at a later date into a new section on the website, giving advice - a bit like the Union have done but based on your comments.
Successful Summer Ball attracts more than 3,000
18 June 2006
Hoards of students descended upon the South Kensington campus last night, not to enjoy another night in the library but instead to eat and drink at the Union's annual Summer Ball. The event attracted a large number of RSMers, especially second to fourth years, many of whom will be leaving us at the end of this week, and many of whom made it to the end of the night for the RSM's own Survivor's photo. You can check out all the photos from last night in the Photo Gallery, under Imperial Events [More..]
£40,000 price tag for Union website
17 June 2006
It has been revealed that the new Union website cost an extraordinary £40,000 to design and build. The new website, which brings with it several new and useful features, is certainly worth more than the average website but with this price tag, questions are raised as to whether or not the Union have paid too much. The design of the new website looks relatively "low budget" and certainly not what you would expect at such a high price. Meanwhile, the RSM endeavours to launch a similar system in the coming weeks, with features not dissimilar to the new Union website, at a total cost of £0. Tell us what you think in our Forum [More..].
Summer Ball "just got hotter"
17 June 2006
In an update for tomorrow's weather forecast, temperatures are expected to soar to a very hot 28°C, according to the BBC Weather. Brace yourselves for an unpleasant start to the ball, which last year notoriously fell on the hottest day of the year.
High-speed RSM website
16 June 2006
Following all the shifting around as a result of the launch of the new Union website, the RSM website, along with all the other websites for clubs and societies, remain on the old system and therefore you will notice a significant increase in the speed of the website. Pages and photos will now load significantly faster than before!
Summer ball scorcher!
15 June 2006
This Saturday, the South Kensington campus at Imperial College becomes one extensive party arena as the Summer Ball once again descends its anarchy. The great news for all is that this year is set to be another scorcher of an evening, with temperatures during Saturday reaching a steamy 26°C and no less than 17°C during the night. More than hot enough, this comes nowhere close to last year's horrifically intense heat of more than 34°C which caused the Tanaka air conditioning to crash and many-a jacket and bow-tie to be quickly disgarded before the champagne reception had even finished.
Website updates
15 June 2006
The Union launched its new website last night and an early error in the omission of the RSM as a CSC was quickly rectified. Following on from this, the RSM remains on the verge of launching a new system of our own which promises to revolutionise your website visits, fully integrated with the new Union website but retaining our own character and packed full of endless pages of information for students, prospective students, alumni, and anyone else that wants to visit. The stunning new website will launch in a few weeks so keep an eye out for the developments.
New Union website omits RSM
14 June 2006
The launch of an impressive but perhaps difficult to use website for the IC Union has been overshadowed by the omission of RSM, not recognised as one of the main CSC's. Discussion has already been started in the new Union forums about this contraversial error. This aside, the new website provides easy access to purchasing tickets, club memberships, loads of new information and much more. Take a look at www.imperialcollegeunion.org.
World Cup discussion
14 June 2006
Cast your vote in the Forum on who you think will be the winner of the 2006 World Cup. You can also post your comments on matches, teams, who you think will win, and who won't, or anything else you want to share with others.
New Union website launches tomorrow
13 June 2006
The brand new Union website is set to be launched at 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday) night. The website encompasses a wide range of new features, although the new design of the website on which we have all been waiting is perhaps a little disappointing. There are already fears that the transition could cause major disruption to all other websites currently hosted on the Union's server, including the RSM, so should you have any problems over the coming days please be patient.
Sell your stuff online
13 June 2006
It's that time of the year where many of us are preparing to graduate, move house, etc, so while you are clearing out all your stuff over the next few weeks why not sell the stuff you don't need and make a bit of cash! And, at the same time, you might pick yourself up a bargain. Simply log in to the Forum, go to the 'For Sale' forum, and post away. Textbooks, books, furniture, computer equipment,... the list goes on, and you can sell it. [More..]
Mining is "most certainly back"
10 June 2006
The FTSE 100 closed on Friday with Mining stocks leading the top share index. Gold and copper prices have rebounded after recent falls with Anglo American and Rio Tinto being two of the biggest gainers this week. This is just the most recent success for mining companies, which is most certainly an industry restrengthening and provides good career and future prospects for all RSMers.
Preparations made for new website
10 June 2006
The brand new RSM website is to be launched in the coming days in preparation for the next academic year. Unlike new websites in the past, the new RSM site promises to be revolutionary. It will enable users to login to access certain content, encouraging a thriving online community. There will be greatly enhanced news, with the website opening up to posts by a much wider range of people and, reporting on a much greater range of stories. In addition, certain users will be able to update pages which will open up the website to sports teams and club officers who need to make regular changes, without going through the Web Officer. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the website, get in touch.
Pub Golf attracts many
08 June 2006
Last night's Pub Golf attracted a large group of RSMers onto the streets of Kensington and Fulham for another trip around nine of the finest venues the area has to offer. Thanks to all those who came along and congratulations to all those who completed the 'course' and handed in their scorecards, you have been entered into the draw for some fantastic prizes!!
Union poised to launch new website
05 June 2006
The Union is on the verge of launching the brand new website, packed with loads of new information and features. It will run on a more powerful server, which means it will load quicker. As part of the redevelopment, the RSM website will be left on the old system and therefore during the transfer period there may be problems loading pages etc.
Pub Golf "ready to go"
05 June 2006
The route for Wednesday night's Pub Golf is being finalised, as preparations are well underway for the big event. It all kicks off at 5.30 pm in the Union Bar with... yes... FREE BEER for all participants. Once again, you can play the game in teams, individually, in pairs, whatever you want. Scorecards will be given out on the night, bring a pencil. The final venue of the evening will be announced in the next few days.
Scholarship for MSc Petroleum Geoscience
01 June 2006
If you are interested in a career in the petroleum industry you might want to consider spending one more year at IC. We have one industry-funded scholarship for the next academic year's MSc Petroleum Geoscience course (starting October 2006), and possibly up to two additional NERC studentships. The Norsk Hydro industry scholarship includes a 3-month work placement in Norway, either Bergen or Oslo, next summer (June-August). All the scholarship cover full fees and maintenance, including fieldwork. The latter includes a spectacular two-week fieldtrip to Utah. If you're interested in a petroleum-related geoscience career, are expecting to get a good 2.1 degree or higher and can handle another year in IC, then please get in touch with either myself, Chris or Gary. We'd be pleased to discuss any aspects of the MSc course and offer advice on future career and job opportunities in the oil industry. At the moment the whole energy sector is booming and our MSc degree is one of the most respected in the industry. Last year resulted in 100% employment by the end of the course, all in geoscience-related jobs. The core technical parts of the course are sedimentology, structural geology and basin analysis, all taught using industry state-of-the art software.
DLB committee meeting
31 May 2006
There will be a DLB committee meeting, today (Wednesday) at 12 pm in room 1.51. All new committee members are invited to attend, as several important issues are to be discussed regarding next years events.
Pub Golf is confirmed for 7 June
25 May 2006
After the success of the last Pub Golf at Christmas, the RSM is excited to announce that the event will return in just 2 weeks from now. Set to take place on Wednesday 7th June, the summer version of Pub Golf will aim to visit 9 establishments, as a pub crawl with a twist. The event will start earlier than previously, with a keg at the Union bar to kick start the event. We look forward to seeing you all there!!
Join Facebook and the RSM community
24 May 2006
Although our own forum lays dormant, a new online community of RSM students, and indeed thousands of Imperial students, has taken off on 'Facebook', the new craze which has swept through college over the last few weeks. If you are not already a member, you can sign up with your Imperial address at www.facebook.com.
RSM announces campaign for Clauds Café
22 May 2006
Following the shock announcement that Claud's Café is to close, it has been revealed that the café's management were UNAWARE of any forthcoming closure until the news was announced online. In a remarkable twist, it turns out that the Imperial Administration have so far only informed ESE staff of the closure. The RSM is on the verge of launching a massive campaign to save the café, which is predicted to draw strong support from both staff and students across both departments. It looks likely that a petition will be launched in the coming days.
Fieldtrip photos uploaded
22 May 2006
Photos from the fourth year Pyrenees trip have and are being uploaded, and photos from other trips are soon to be online. If you would like to add photos, please contact Seb.
Students and staff united over Claud's closure
07 May 2006
The announcement that Claud's Café is to close in the coming months for renovation, and subsequently to become a new café run by IC catering, has sparked an angry response across the RSM. In a rare occurrence, both staff and students are united in protest against the closure. The prospect is for higher prices (an average raise of more than 200% for tea and coffee!), reduced choice and unfriendly service.
Fieldtrips depart across Europe
07 May 2006
This weekend marks the start of the 'fieldwork season', which over the next two to three weeks will see students from all years departing to destinations across Europe, including Spain, Scotland and SW England, for various fieldtrips. We hope everyone has a good time and look forward to seeing you all again on return.
Clauds will close: and be replaced by an IC café
02 May 2006
In a shocking announcement this lunchtime, it has been revealed that Claud's Café is to close in a matter of weeks as renovation work begins on the third floor. In the latest development, it has been revealed that when the café reopens, it will be taken over by IC catering, forcing prices to rise and the selection of food to be dramatically altered and reduced. These plans have prompted an angry reaction across the RSM, and it is very likely that these plans will prompt anarchy and insurgency within the RSM student population.
On the agenda: today's meetings
02 May 2006
Both the DLB and RSM committees meet this lunchtime, at 12 and 1 pm respectively, to discuss forthcoming events this term. Today's meeting agenda will include discussion of website improvements, Pub Golf, a DLB fieldtrip and the possibility of another Gooma Looma.
Students into Mining: tomorrow
01 May 2006
Don't forget that on Tuesday (tomorrow!) at 5pm, there is a mining careers evening where you have the chance to hear from numerous companies. The event lasts for about two hours, and is followed by a networking session with free food and drinks (strictly for event attendees only!). For loads more info, you can now visit the Mining Careers microsite, www.rsmonline.co.uk/mining.
Pub Golf one step closer to returning
01 May 2006
After months of speculation, I am pleased to announce that Pub Golf looks set to make a return later in the term. Provisionally scheduled for sometime around late May to early June, the 'summer' version of the popular RSM pub crawl 'with a twist' will encompass pubs and bars across Kensington and Fulham, on a similar route to the previous Pub Golf last Christmas. This means that the competition is once again on, to find the RSM Pub Golf champions of Summer '06! Better get practising....
High spec computer stolen from G39
28 April 2006
Once again, thieves have struck in the RSM this week with the disappearance of a high-performance Remote Sensing machine from the back of G39 computer room. The machine is thought to have been stolen some time this week, although a precise time is not known. Anyone with any information should come forward immediately. This is just one of several expensive items to go missing in recent time, following the theft of several laptops earlier in the year. Questions have already been raised as to whether it may be due to laxed security during the renovation works of the Bessemer building.
Careers in tunneling for RSM students
28 April 2006
A major UK-based tunneling contractor is looking to identify graduates for current and future projects in the southeast of England. It is very much a company that will develop people correctly and in the area that they desire, so it is open to a larger group that hold interest in Tunneling. However, you may find that such an interest has been best developed if you have been involved in courses such as Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics or Structural Geology etc. Check your email (ESE 3/4) or contact us for details on how to apply.
Good luck to RSM marathon runners
23 April 2006
We would like to wish Henry Brown and John Sykes, both fourth year Geologists, and anyone else who we may not know about, the best of luck for tomorrow's London Marathon. The 26 mile race takes place this morning. Henry is raising money for Save the Rhino, while John is raising money for Whiz Kidz. If you would like to sponsor either of them, visit the marathon page in Sports section [More]
The Final Finale: an event to end all others
21 April 2006
A brand new event this year which promises to be LEGENDARY! On 5th May, join us for a finger buffet, no less than 500 pints of quality beers and real ales, courtesy in part to Fullers, plus wine and soft drinks, i.e. all you can eat and drink! What more could you want! And all for only £5 – bloody good bargain old chap!
The evening will also include the presentation of this year’s RSM colours awards. Everyone has finished their exams, so there is NO excuse not to come. Tickets will be on sale from Thursday April 27th, from ~12-2pm in the RSM Foyer.
Kosice Mining School announce ISW

20 April 2006
A reminder that you should bring your examination candidate number to every examination, together with your College identity card which should be displayed on your desk throughout all examinations. Candidates are prohibited from taking mobile telephones, brief cases, document cases, pencil cases, bags or any other such impedimenta into the examination rooms. Please ensure that these are securely locked away in your lockers before the examinations. No food or drink, (other than clear bottles of water) is permitted into the examination room. Good luck in your examinations. (Ed: I don't think I've ever seen anyone with a brief case wandering around the RSM to be honest... ;)
Mining careers evening announced
20 April 2006
As part of a campaign to better educate students about the many opportunities offered by the mining industry and get graduates back into mining, the RSM, in association with Minesite.com, has organised a 'Students into Mining' evening here at the Royal School of Mines. This will take place in room 1.51 on Tuesday, 2nd May, beginning at 5pm. It will consist of a series of short presentations followed by an informal networking session in Harringtons Bar where students and professionals can meet, discuss opportunities, and exchange ideas over some food and drinks. A selection of mining/exploration companies will talk about their activities, life in the industry and, in particular, focus on any work experience or graduate opportunities they can offer to students and graduates to help them gain vital practical skills and increase their exposure to mining and mineral exploration. The event is completely free and open to everyone - any students or recent graduates from any institution, and mining and minerals industry professionals from any discipline or background. We strongly encourage all of you to attend - opportunities like this are rare, and for a few hours of your time you could pick up vital contacts, summer work or even a job. Not to mention free food and drink....

11 April 2006
Following the reinstatement of RSM in the IFMMS, we are pleased to announce that the first ISW (International Student Week) has been scheduled for 7-13 May 2006 (note: some fieldtrips are running at this time aswell, you will need to check your timetable). New CMS chosen
11 April 2006
The new Content Management System, which will be used to build the new RSM website, has been chosen. "Mambo", a system which some of you may be familiar with, provides a powerful setup allowing for news, forums, photo galleries, and vast amounts of information to all be stored in a simple and easy to update format. The aim is to integrate the system into the current page template. There will also be new features to allow you to login to the entire website from the homepage, for messaging, forum and photo gallery use, and much more.
RSM reinitiates links with IFMMS
11 April 2006
After several years of lost contact, RSM has rebuilt contacts and links with the IFMMS - the International Federation for Mining and Metallurgy Students. This is a group of schools and colleges, just like RSM, based across Europe. The main aim of the federation is to organise International Student Weeks (ISW's), whereby member colleges send out invites to other members to come and visit them for a few days to a week. It is an important link to have and it is great to see it come back.
RSM website braced for major overhaul
09 April 2006
In the coming weeks and months the RSM website is to be completely overhauled. It has not yet been decided whether the appearance of the website will change, but the way it works and the content is going to be vastly improved. The new website - including a full site for the RSMA - will be built on a new Content Management System, which will allow for much easier updates by many more people. In particular, focus will be put onto an online news system - similar to "Live!" - which will integrate the Pit and Web News into one system. If you have any ideas, let us know in the Forum.
Grim outlook for RSM Forum
06 April 2006
Despite recent efforts to drive more visitors towards the RSM Forums, there have been almost no new posts. The Forums remain the second most visited page on the website, but the complete inactivity is threatening the Forum's future. Meanwhile, down in CSM, a thriving interactive community has developed and amazingly more RSMers post there than on our very own website.
80,000 hits for RSM Online
04 April 2006
Since statistics began counting this time last year, the RSM website has attracted a staggering 80,000 hits, from more than 26,000 visitors. That's an average of 218 page loads every single day. Over the last term, the website saw some days with record highs in visitor numbers but overall, the website was less popular this term than in Autumn. With the onset of holidays, the visitor levels have crashed but are expected to pick up again come the start of revision!
Registered on the Forum?
04 April 2006
Did you know, the RSM website runs a complete and easy to use Forum system. However, in recent times it's been a bit quiet and we would like to encourage as many RSMers as possible to use it. Whether you want a bit of banter, post some news or questions, course-related or not, the Forum is there for your use. If you have any suggestions on how it could be improved, let us know - click here.

Sports section redevelopment
02 April 2006
The sports section of the website has never quite been completed, so now that I've got just a few days spare I am working to put the finishing touches to pages that have been offline for a long time. Football is already back, and you will notice some changes to the sports homepage. There will also be new pages to help captains and sports committees to access Union-related forms and documents, as well as post match reports.
Talk: Exploration of the Ivanhoe Mines
28 March 2006
At 3pm today, in room 1.51, there is a guest lecture by Doug Kirwin, Executive Vice President of Exploration of Ivanhoe Mines. This company is responsible for the discovery of the Oyu Tolgoi deposit in Mongolia in 2004 - the worlds largest copper-gold development project. This is a great opportunity to hear about not only the geology of this resource but also get an insight into the reality of exploration in this fast-growing region.
End of another successful term
28 March 2006
As the end of the spring term came and went, the last three months have been hailed as yet another successful term for the RSM. This term's events included bar nights, the elections and of course, the Bottle Match. The popularity of the events and the ever increasing involvement of students in the lower years gives good prospects for the term ahead, when new committee members will begin the hand-over period.

22 March 2006
Imperial College Union has announced that this year's Summer Ball will be held on Saturday 17th June. 17 March 2006
Marcus Lemberger takes over as DLB President from Liz Stock after the DLB elections this lunchtime. He will be supported by Chris Larvin as Hon Sec and Will Turner as Treasurer. The AGM was focused on the successes of the DLB this year, which have included the fieldtrips and Symposium, although next year a major emphasis will be placed on attracting far more freshers and second years to get involved with the club; a priority now reflected across the RSM.

After a week of suspense, the results of this year's RSM elections were announced earlier this evening in Harringtons. Many of the positions were tightly contended, including the Vice President post. A full list of election results is now available online [More..].
Hours to go before election results
16 March 2006
We are now just hours away from hearing who will be in next year's RSM committee. Election results: 2 days
15 March 2006
There are now just 2 days until the results of last week's elections are announced to the RSM. Early indications say that several of the key positions have been very closely contested while others have been won by landslides. It has also been revealed that more than 30% of RSM students voted - which is actually quite high, and in-line with Imperial Union elections. Of this, more than 40% of undergraduates voted but this year, a higher turn-out of post graduate students showed a shift in trend.
RSM victorious against BBC
14 March 2006
RSM mixed hockey have won another match against the BBC (yes, that's right, the people who bring us TV!), at Roehampton on Monday night. The final score, 3-0, is attributed to a good team effort. Mixed team captain, Rachel Kershaw, said: "It was cold, very cold, but everyone played brilliantly. There was some truly amazing hockey out there tonight. Man of the match to Mikey and Lucy, champagne moment to Pikester for the drama queen dive to save the ball (when he could have quite easily just kicked it) and dick of the day to Tim for despite scoring not making the most of all his other chances."
Gooma Looma: today (Tuesday)
13 March 2006
Don't forget, the DLB are offering an 'all-you-can-drink' Gooma Looma in the fish bowl tomorrow evening, starting at 5pm. It costs a mere £2 to get in and it's a chance for you to meet many of the current DLB members and experience the social side of this infamous geology club.
Voting closes on Day 3 of 3
10 March 2006
Voting closed for the last time this lunchtime in the 2006 Elections. There is now a nervous wait for all candidates, who will find out the results next Thursday evening in the Union Bar. There was a good turn-out from both Geologists and Materialists, and the results are expected to be very close for many of the positions. Thank you to everyone who voted and ran for a position, and good luck.
Vicious comments must stop
09 March 2006
Another bombardment of obnoxious comments has been posted on the photo gallery in the last 48 hours. The comments, posted by a select few Camborne students, will not be tolerated and undermine the true spirit of the RSM-CSM rivalry. If you find any comments that are unsuitable, please report them.
Voting closes on Day 2 of 3
09 March 2006
A contraversial second day of voting closed with a generally higher % turn-out from Materials students. Election campaigns have been stepped up across both departments, with a late surge of voters expected on Friday. Remember that tomorrow is the final day of voting and you can vote from 12-2 pm in the RSM Foyer, it takes just one or two minutes and your vote is so essential. For all the candidates and manifestos, check the election page. [More..]

This is your chance to meet them, and to grill them with your own questions. We strongly advise everyone to attend, it's your vote that counts and it's your RSM!
Election nominations close
06 March 2006
At 5 pm this evening, nominations for this year's RSM elections officially closed with a good number of candidates standing for roles in next years committee. The top jobs are in high demand, with a late entry from Sam Phillips joining the presidential race, and Susie joining the candidates for Vice President. A full list of all the candidates will appear online shortly. If you are a candidate, you are invited to post a short manifesto (no more than 120 words) in the RSM Forum, which will be added to the elections page.
Seb joins Presidential race
05 March 2006
Web officer and golf captain Seb Turner, currently in fourth year Geology and Geophysics, last night confirmed rumours that he would be standing in this year's elections for RSM President. There is still time to get your name down and everyone is encouraged to join in!
John Collins becomes ICU president
03 March 2006
In an election victory last night, it was announced that John Collins, former C&G president and avid supporter of the RSM, is to be next year's president of Imperial College Union. This is fantastic news for the RSM and indeed all similar institutions across the university. He gained more than 950 votes, almost three times as much as any other candidate.

Bottle Match: is here
24 February 2006
Finally we reach the first of two days of sport. Early this morning the golf team departed for Camborne to kick start the weekend, hopefully with good news for everyone else on arrival later this afternoon. We wish all the teams the very best of luck - go kick some Camborne arse. Camborne going down? Let's hope so!!
Bottle 2006: 1 day to go
23 February 2006
That's right, tomorrow sees the official start of the Bottle Match 2006 - kicking off with golf and squash competitions, followed on Saturday by all the rest including the rugby. So time for another Bottle Match fact. "The Bottle", the infamous trophy, was actually stolen from a beer lorry in 1946 by RSM students. The competition had been played for almost 50 years prior to this, each year fighting to win the prestigious "sock" - worn by the captain on the very first match ever.
Bottle 2006: 2 days to go
22 February 2006
We are now just 2 days away from the biggest RSM event of the year, where seven sports teams and a large number of spectators travel all the way to Cornwall for the Bottle Match 2006. It all kicks off at midday on Friday, taking on our rivals at Camborne in golf for the very first time. Did you know ... the Bottle Match is 104 years old this year, and RSM have now held the Bottle successively for 9 years!
RSM deep freeze here to stay
22 February 2006
You may have noticed the chilling temperatures in the RSM over the last few days. The good news is, this is because some builders 'accidentally destroyed a sprocket' so we have no central heating. The system was set to be repaired by today, however delays mean it is unlikely we'll be working in anything above 10 degrees for at least another week, possibly longer.
Applications now open for elections
22 February 2006
Have you thought about what you would do, if you were to be a part of the RSM committee? Think you could make a difference whilst developing invaluable skills and experiences? Then you should consider applying for a position in next year's RSM committee. Elections take place in just 3 weeks, giving you just over 2 weeks to get your application for election in. [More..]

DLB hosts successful Symposium
17 February 2006
Once again, the DLB club have run a very successful Symposium, this year featuring the role of water in geological processes. Despite reading week, the talks received a good turn out and were enjoyed by all. The lunch, coffee breaks and evening entertainment were, as usual, all of very high standard and much praise is given to all those involved.
DLB Symposium kicks off
16 February 2006
The 2006 DLB Symposium, focusing on the role of water in geological processes, has kicked off this morning in 1.47. Talks continue throughout the day and all are invited to attend. Get yourself along asap and see the DLB website for a full outline of the day's schedule.
Competition winner to be announced
06 February 2006
We can now officially reveal that the winner of the 2006 Bottle Match t-shirt competition is to be revealed within hours. Following a vast number of last minute entries, all of which are now online for public viewing and slandering in the photo gallery, disrupted the original plans and with so many good ideas to choose from the award has been delayed. Check back soon for all the details!
Bottle match ticket sales soar
06 February 2006
Sales of tickets for this years Bottle Match have soared. There are only limited places, so to book yourself on the best weekend of the year, at an incredibly cheap price of £40 including all travel, accomodation and breakfasts, get yourself to the RSM office any lunchtime and buy a ticket. Ticket sales for team members have also tripled. Sports officer Simon Pike has requested all teams purchase their tickets as soon as possible.
Claud's introduce mini pizza
04 February 2006
Following suggestions before Christmas, Claud's Café on the third floor of the RSM has introduced mini 'Chicago Town' pizzas onto the lunchtime menu. Available in just 2 minutes, a pizza will cost you £1.50 - the same as Claud's popular soggy pasta - giving you a satisfactory lunch at a bargain price.
Bottle match ticket sales remain poor
04 February 2006
A large number of tickets for this year's Bottle match remain to be sold. The main reason for this is because team members are yet to buy their tickets, despite a deadline passing yesterday. All team players are urged to buy their tickets as soon as possible before they are made available to supporters. Non-playing tickets have sold well. To get your ticket, visit the RSM office any lunchtime.
T-shirt design still to be confirmed
03 February 2006
The final design for the Bottle Match t-shirt remains yet to be confirmed. Following a meeting yesterday lunchtime, no final decision could be made on the winning entry although more ideas were put forward. The official winner is expected to be announced soon. Meanwhile, the entries have been causing much banter across the RSM as visitors flock to the photo gallery to check out what everyone's chatting about.
Fourth year in class reunion
03 February 2006
The fourth year enjoyed a successful class reunion last night with a good turnout of both past and present students who started their studies in 2002. The event took place at the glamourous Lloyds Bar in Fulham Broadway. Special thanks to Jo for organising the evening.
Salt tectonics stuns crowd
03 February 2006
Dr Gary Hampson gave a fascinating insight into the geological study of salt, and its relationship to tectonics and impacts on sediments. The DLB organised the talk, which saw a large turn out from across the department, including a healthy abundance of MSc students. Special thanks to Gary for a fantastic talk.
Tonight: Salt Tectonics
02 February 2006
This evening at 6pm Dr Gary Hampson, an expert in all things sedimentary, will be giving a talk on salt tectonics, and the impacts thereof. The talk will last about an hour, and takes place in G.41. However for any fourth years considering going to the class reunion for Ili, you may find yourself short of time due to the delayed start.
Winner yet to be announced
01 February 2006
The Bottle Match t-shirt competition closed last night with all the entries now on display in the photo gallery. However, the competition is yet to produce a firm winner. There are several ideas that were submitted and would like to be used, so until a final decision is made no clear cut winner has yet been announced. Early indications suggest that James Gardener, fourth year geology, may have won the competition.
Departmental seminar: tomorrow
01 February 2006
Please note that there will be a departmental seminar tomorrow. Professor Paul Valdes from the University of Bristol will be giving a talk on 'Climate modelling of the past: an Earth Systems Perspective'. Thursday 2nd February, 2-3 pm, in room 1.51. Apologies for the short notice but it was mistakenly omitted from the Spring schedule circulated earlier.
Warning over new virus
01 February 2006
A serious virus known as Blackmal or Nyxem is currently infecting unprotected PCs, and will wipe data from infected systems on Friday 3rd February. Virus definitions to provide protection against this virus have been available since 17th January 2006, but you are advised to ensure that your PC at work and at home is running anti-virus software, with up-to-date virus definitions. ICT has been monitoring the College network for PCs showing signs of infection, and arranging the disinfection of these systems. (from ICT)
Competition entries shock weary visitors
31 January 2006
With just one day left until the Bottle Match t-shirt competition officially closes, we have released all the entries submitted so far onto the internet. Check them out on the photo gallery, click on 'Other', and follow the link. We had no idea the RSM was so crude - we're loving it! Some of the entries could, umm, maybe have had a bit more work, but thanks for your efforts. And there are some that really stand out. Entries close 31 Jan and the winner will be announced on Wednesday.
Computer room drops to 12°C
27 January 2006
Conditions in the Bessemer computer room have reached a chilling 12°C this afternoon, as Siberian temperatures set in to London. The computer room has been deemed almost unsuitable for use, as heating systems are shut off for maintenance in the rest of building. This is just one in a long line of issues surrounding one of just two computer rooms in the department, which has been constantly noisy since summer. The nearest toilets are also squalid, not having been cleaned for five months, and now acting as temporary home to the RSM senior treasurer.
Last chance for competition entries
27 January 2006
There are now just a few days to go until the Bottle Match competition closes, so get your entries in as soon as you can. We are looking for a design for this year's Bottle t-shirts, if your idea wins it will be printed on the t-shirts and you will win other prizes aswell. It will take just a small amount of your time to come up with a design but you could go down in RSM history!! Full details under Events section.
MSci seminar day confirmed
26 January 2006
The date for this years MSci presentations has been confirmed as Tuesday 14th February. The day is highly recommended for third and second years who will be doing a similar project in coming years. All invited. Full details will be announced online soon.
Website updates

There have been some changes on the RSM website in the last few days. Check out the brand new Real Ale website, and the upgraded DLB website - which now includes all the latest information on the symposium and Salt Tectonics talk - through the Societies section. You may have also noticed some changes to the layout of the homepage.

RSM to run mining careers evening
23 January 2006
As careers advice in the department becomes ever more oil orientated, the RSM have taken it upon themselves to organise a mining careers evening. More details to come.
DLB lay out plans for mining classes
23 January 2006
DLB officer John Sykes and Chaps president Barry Stoffell have proposed a practical mining course covering the more exciting aspects of the world of ore deposits, in a series of evening classes. These would include access to some of the finest mineral specimens from the NHM, and trips to see electron microscopes, laser ablators, and even the real thing in fieldtrips to North Wales.
Committee meeting: tomorrow at 1pm
22 January 2006
Just a brief reminder to everyone in the RSM committee that there is a meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Monday) lunchtime at 1pm. All committee members should attend as there are a number of important issues to cover, including Bottle Match. The meeting will take place in the RSM office and should not last more than about 30-45 mins.
Golf launch bid for Paul Grant Cup
21 January 2006
Yes, that's right. The Paul Grant Cup. We are about to invest in the trophy that will, for the first time this year, be awarded at the Bottle Match to the winning team of the golf competition.
